The 12 Steps of NA

Narcotics Anonymous has a 12-step program that is purposed to further place people on the sure road to recovery from drug addiction. Each of the steps has been set to help encourage personal growth, accountability, and positive change in the individual. A summary of the different steps goes as follows:

  1. We admitted we were powerless over our addiction—that our lives had become unmanageable.

Admitting the addiction was out of control and being in denial to seek help.

  2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

Believing in a Higher Power that could help an individual into recovery.

  3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

To make a decision to give up control and let a Higher Power take over.

  4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

Deeply looking at personal shortcomings and behaviors in honesty.

  5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

The admission of mistakes/wrongs to foster healing.

  6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

Becoming open to change and the removal of personal flaws.

  7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

Seeking divine assistance in the elimination of personal weaknesses.

  8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

Identifying those who suffered from past actions and being prepared to seek their forgiveness.

  9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

Actually doing all that is possible to repair the damage without further causing injury.

  10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

Keeping good practice of being reflective and promptly taking responsibility for one's actions.

  11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

Improvement of spiritual contact and guiding one in everyday life.

  12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Sharing the message of recovery and working the 12 Steps in day-to-day life.
